This is a very interesting plant! The Prickly Pear is indigenous to this area. It only blooms once a year in about July.
Trying to weed around it is a definite challenge! Usually, we go around pulling out stickers from our arms for a couple of weeks.

That is what I read but I never see the fruit, probably because I am not looking for it :). Next year I will have to pay more attention!

Your welcome! It is always fun to watch them because you never expect them to bloom…they just have flowers! They are so pretty I wish they would keep blooming!
Aren’t they gone by now? I have never been in desert in autumn, but in spring all the opuntia species look gorgeous. Nothing like desert in bloom 🙂

OK…I had Sandy go out and take pictures and I tried the red “fruit”…waiting to see if it was poisonous! Ahhhhh…just kidding…They are just little things but they taste OK…No idea how to fix them or do you just split them open and eat them? Had no idea that was the fruit! Thanks guys!
